As one of the UK’s oldest family owned food companies, Bennett Opie LTD is committed to maintaining this status, which has been cemented by the fifth generation of the family who have taken up key roles within the business as Philip Opie Technical Director and Chairman retires from his full time executive role.

Philip’s son, Christopher Opie has joined as Sales & Marketing Director having amassed a wealth of experience within the FMCG sector, latterly at Unilever. Together with his team he will be responsible for the development and execution of the sales and marketing plans across all brands and channels, including Opies and its associated manufactured brands as well as the exclusive Monin Agency, Lingham’s Chilli Sauces and Ferns Curry.

Anthony Opie, son of Managing Director William Opie, has also joined as a Management Trainee. Anthony is gaining a broad knowledge of the business and industry by working across all departments and is currently based within the logistics team.

Christopher Opie said “Bennett Opie is a successful company with an excellent team and our Opies brand has great potential for growth across all sectors, retail and foodservice as well as for export. We also have exciting plans for new product development that we are keen to launch in the coming months. We are also exploring opportunities to add to our select list of agency brands that we exclusively represent in the UK. I’m delighted and proud to be part of the business established by my family in 1880.”

Managing Director William Opie said “Bennett Opie are proud of our long-lasting family heritage and with Christopher and Anthony joining this has really cemented our future. Christopher has gained great experience throughout his career which will prove to be invaluable for the future growth and development of the business. I am pleased that Anthony will also be involved and is building his experience across all areas of the organisation. Sometimes, the best way to learn about a company is to see how they operate from the ground up. Whilst welcoming both Christopher and Anthony, the business will undoubtedly miss the presence of my brother Philip. Without his help, hard work and experience the business would not have achieved the success it has today.”

Prior to taking up his role as Chairman and Technical Director, Philip Opie graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline. He has been influential in the development of many of Opies best-selling products, implemented numerous factory developments and introduced technological advancements. In addition to his role at Bennett Opie, Philip has been active within the wider food and drink industry as a member of the Institute of Food Scientists and Technologists serving on influential committees including the Leatherhead Research Association, Food & Drink Federation and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Food Processing. Philip will remain as a director on the Bennett Opie board.
