The hotel is an early 20th century country house built for Sir Philip Sassoon by Herbert Baker and Philip Tilden. Completed after World War One, it was abandoned after World War Two following Sir Philip’s death in 1939. In December, 1966, the house became Grade II*-listed. In 1973, John Aspinall purchased the estate as part of his expansion of Howletts Zoo. However, even before this new life began the Mansion had led an interesting life.
