British Royal Gala apples grown by Kent’s AC Goatham & Son are available to buy in Sainsbury’s this July and August for the first time ever. In an industry busting first, AC Goatham & Son will be supplying supermarket shelves with luscious red British Royal Gala this summer, meaning the nation’s favourite variety can now be bought for 12 months of the year, competing directly with Southern Hemisphere imported and lighter coloured gala from South Africa, South America and New Zealand.
Carol Ford Commercial Director at AC Goatham & Son comments: “UK shoppers like to support British grown food but would have previously had to wait from around May/June till mid-September when the new season British Royal Gala apples are harvested. Other ‘early’ British varieties such as Discovery and Zari are available from mid to late August.
“It has been a long-held ambition for the team at Goatham’s to extend the British season, enabling the UK public to enjoy their British Royal Gala apples this summer, when supplies would have normally run out.
