Who on earth was Gordon Bennett?!
Born in Scotland in 1795, Gordon Bennett moved to the USA and made his name as a top journalist. He founded the New York Herald and made a fortune – a fortune his son was more than happy to spend in the most flamboyant way possible.

The younger Gordon Bennett became known for his outrageous antics, but one in particular really left a mark. At a swanky New Year’s party thrown by his fiancée’s family in 1877, he got so paralytically drunk he mistook the fireplace for the loo – and used it. Right there in the middle of the party. Needless to say, the engagement didn’t last... but the expression “GORDON BENNETT!” certainly did.
