Green Farm seeks volunteers for its charity

As well as our spa, retreats and short breaks, Green Farm is home to a nature-inspired charity; the Pearce-Coggan Foundation. Established in 2014, the Foundation helps people to connect with nature.

You can find out more about what we do and why by visiting our charity website. As we explain below, the community garden at Green Farm is central to our charity work and we're looking to boost our small team of volunteers.

If you have regular time to spare and are local to us, we hope this newsletter will explain what you can gain from volunteering, as well as the difference you could make.

What's it like to volunteer at Green Farm?

During the lockdowns, many people discovered a love of nature and relished the chance to spend time outdoors, however limited. Sales of seeds soared as people experimented with growing their own fruit and veg but not everyone has access to a garden or allotment.

A chance meeting led to Hannah Collison becoming a Community Garden volunteer. Since joining us in the spring, she has become a regular, helping us with planting, weeding and picking the produce.

In this blog, Hannah explains why she gives her time and what she gets from volunteering.

About the community garden

Time spent in nature provides a wealth of benefits, from enhancing mental health and wellbeing to improving physical health. Research suggests young people, in particular, have lost touch with nature.

The community garden is a key part of the work of our charity, the Pearce Coggan Foundation, as it provides a hands-on learning environment for local schools and charities. We host regular school visits where children learn more about nutrition, growing fruit and veg, and how to reduce the amount of food that ends up in the bin.

Produce from the garden is used to create nourishing meals for the families who take part in the camps organised by Outdoor People, one of the charities the Foundation works with. It’s also sold at the weekly pop-up shop to raise money which supports the Foundation’s work to help people connect with nature.
