In 1898, Alice Keppel was 29 years old, married to George Keppel and already a mother.

Then she caught the eye of the 56-year-old Albert Edward, Prince of Wales — the eldest son of Queen Victoria and the future King Edward VII.

There was, of course, one fairly significant complication.

Edward was married too.

His wife was Princess Alexandra of Denmark, whom he had married in 1863.

Who was Alice Keppel?

Alice was known for her beauty, charm and social skills, and she became much more than a fleeting figure in Edward's notoriously colourful private life.

Their relationship lasted for around 12 years.

Then, in January 1901, Queen Victoria died and the Prince of Wales became King Edward VII.

But Alice remained an important part of his private life.

Her position was extraordinary: she was married to George Keppel while being widely acknowledged in society as the King's mistress.

The relationship continued until Edward's death in 1910.

How is Alice Keppel related to Queen Camilla?

And this is where an already fascinating royal story acquires an extraordinary modern twist.

Alice Keppel and her husband George had a daughter named Sonia.

Sonia had a daughter Rosalind Cubitt.

Rosalind grew up and had a daughter Camilla Shand.

And Camilla, of course, is now Queen Camilla, wife of King Charles III.

Which means that Alice Keppel — mistress of King Edward VII more than a century ago — was Queen Camilla's great-grandmother.

History really does have an extraordinary habit of going round in circles.
