Target Audience The NEBOSH National General Certificate gives a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities. This qualification is widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and is accepted by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). What are the benefits for employers? Many organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a key part of their supervisors or management development programme. By ensuring that line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of risk management, they build an effective safety culture in the company. Smaller companies, operating in lower risk environments, often choose NEBOSH National General Certificate as the appropriate qualification for the manager taking the lead on health and safety issues. What does the qualification cover? The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note that the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. Who is the qualification for? Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview and is a sound basis for further professional study. Potential candidates will be required to complete a pre-course questionnaire prior to attending the course, this will detail their experience and recent training to enable the tutors to confirm their suitability for the course. Duration This is a twelve day programme, scheduled over 12 weeks for one day a week in Maidstone; with exams following 1-2 weeks after course completion. The next course starts on Thursday 12th September 2019. Assessment The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
  • Management of Health and Safety (NGC1) (2hr written exam included)
  • Controlling workplace hazards (NGC2) (2hr written exam included)
  • Health and Safety practical application (NGC3) (2hr practical assessment included)
