Spring is here and the farmers markets are bursting with it

Something shifts at a farmers market in April. The stalls look different, the conversations change, and there's a quiet excitement among the growers. Spring produce is arriving - and it doesn't hang around.

Rhubarb has been leading the charge, its tart pink stalks a reliable sign that the season is turning. Now asparagus is joining it, and for the next few weeks Kent's most eagerly anticipated vegetable will be fresh, local and very much worth seeking out. Enjoy it while it lasts - asparagus season is one of the shortest and most delicious of the year.

But a farmers market is never just about one thing. Alongside the seasonal veg you'll find local meat and fish, freshly baked bread, homemade preserves and chutneys, plants for the garden, cakes, coffee, and handmade crafts. It's the kind of shopping that feels good long after you've got home.

My Farmers Market has three dates coming up in April - all running 10am to 2pm, except West Malling which runs 9.30am to 1.30pm:

• Hall Place Bexley Saturday Farmers Market - Saturday 18 April, 10am - 2pm
• Chislehurst Farmers Market - Sunday 19 April, 10am - 2pm
• West Malling Farmers Market - Saturday 26 April, 9.30am - 1.30pm
