Vines, wildlife and hens: life at Brabourne Vineyard in the Kent Downs

Near Ashford in the Kent Downs, Brabourne Vineyard is as much a haven for wildlife as it is a producer of exceptional Kent wine.

Brabourne Vineyard isn’t just about grapes – it’s also a haven for local wildlife. From dragonflies skimming the ponds to rabbits hopping through the long grass, our two-acre vineyard in the Kent Downs is full of life.

"We manage everything with nature in mind," says Hester Fenwick. "It’s not all about the vines, there’s a lot of careful thought about balance. We have wild areas and neat areas; natural hedging, orchards and tended vegetable beds. There’s something for everyone – whether they’re on two, four or six legs"

That ethos has paid off. In just a few years, the vineyard has become home to a growing number of birds, bees, and butterflies. Our new ponds, created with help from Kent Downs National Landscape and Natural England, are already attracting frogs, newts and an ever-expanding array of insects.

We’ve always had a soft spot for animals – from our cats to the chickens, ducks and geese that roam the orchards. It can feel like the animals rule at times, especially when the dogs decide they’re in charge of the tour.

Visitors often comment on the tranquillity here – a sense of space, birdsong, and gentle buzz of nature. And it’s all part of what makes a glass of wine at Brabourne feel that little bit more special.

Come for the tasting, stay for the wildlife. And maybe bring some wellies, just in case.

The joy of a small vineyard is that much of the work can be done by hand, by the family.
