One of science fiction's greatest writers had a Kent connection - and an equally eventful personal life to match his fiction.
Kent has more than its fair share of famous residents - and Quiz Trail has been digging into the story of one of the most remarkable. But we're not giving the answer away just yet. Where in Kent did H.G. Wells live?
The world-famous science fiction writer moved to Sandgate, just outside Folkestone, in 1896 - leaving London behind as he feared the pollution and stress of the city were affecting his already poor health. He would stay there until 1909, writing some of his most celebrated works during that time, including The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man.
Wells was, by all accounts, a man of considerable appetites. Married twice, he was known for a succession of long-term relationships and affairs that ran alongside both marriages, including a relationship with British feminist writer and scholar Amber Reeves - who was 20 to his 41. The affair resulted in a secret pregnancy and the birth of a daughter, Anna-Jane, who wasn't told the identity of her father until she turned 18. Wells went on to live a very full life, passing away in London at the age of 79.
It's exactly this kind of hidden, layered local history that Quiz Trail loves to uncover. Created by a mum and two daughters, Quiz Trails are self-guided outdoor adventures that combine fresh air, clue-solving and Kent's remarkable stories. With trails covering different towns across the county, there's always somewhere new to explore.
