Where in Kent? Discover the village that shaped a Hollywood legend

Explore Kent's hidden history one clue at a time with Canterbury Quiz Trail - a fun, active day out for all the ages.

Just nine miles south of Canterbury lies the village of Elham - a quiet corner of Kent with a remarkable story to tell. It was here, in a cottage on Duck Street, that a young girl called Audrey Ruston grew up. The world would later know her as Audrey Hepburn.

Born in Brussels in 1929, Audrey came to Elham with her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra, following her parents' divorce in 1935. She lived at Orchard Cottage and attended school in the village, where she was affectionately known by locals as "little Audrey." Her time in Kent came to an end in May 1940, when she was eventually flown to Holland to rejoin her family - but not before a dramatic false start at Gatwick, where her plane skidded off the runway and she was brought back to Elham for a few more days. The villagers who had known her as a quiet, unassuming child would next see her face on the silver screen.

It's exactly this kind of hidden local history that Canterbury Quiz Trail loves to uncover. Created by a mum and two daughters, Quiz Trails are self-guided outdoor adventures that weave discovery, clue-solving, and fresh air into a genuinely memorable day out. With trails covering different towns across Kent, there's always somewhere new to explore - and always something surprising waiting to be found.
