This one-day orchard design course is for anyone thinking of establishing an orchard or becoming involved in a community orchard project. You will learn about site assessment and rootstocks, planting patterns and spacing, the number and choice of fruit tree varieties, orchard layout and projected yield. The day includes a tour of part of the National Fruit Collections.

There are two field exercises, which give first-hand experience of site survey and orchard layout. The day concludes with a discussion of case studies brought by the students, and you are encouraged to bring photos of your own site and/or trees.
