Cracking the Code of Retail: Expert Insights from James Finn

On 18 September, Produced in Kent hosted a packed and insightful member event at Sainsbury's Bybrook: Meet the Experts - Cracking the Code of Retail.

Led by grocery retail expert James Finn, the morning gave Kent producers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how retail decisions are made and what really matters to buyers. With over 18 years of experience in ranging, pricing and building store propositions, James brought real-world expertise to the table – and plenty of good humour.

The session kicked off with a deep dive into what makes a product retail-ready, covering everything from packaging that sells itself to planning for retail timelines. James shared invaluable advice on supplier expectations, buyer mindsets, and how to crack the elusive "science of the shelf."

Attendees then took part in small breakout groups where the theory came to life. James led producers around the store, analysing real examples, moving products on shelves, and helping each business visualise where and how their products could sit. It was an eye-opening experience that gave everyone practical, personalised takeaways.

“This was one of the most practical and eye-opening sessions we’ve run. James didn’t just talk about retail – he showed our members exactly how it works, in real time, in the aisles. That kind of access and insight is gold dust for small producers trying to break into retail. These are the connections that matter, and this is what being a Produced in Kent member is all about.”
