As the fields start to dry and planting preparations begin, The Potato Shop at Morghew Farm looks ahead to another year growing over 30 varieties of potatoes for Kent kitchens and restaurants.
Whilst St Patricks Day may have officially passed it doesn’t mean that you can’t still celebrate! We have some great Irish varieties including Golden Wonder, Irish Gold and Kerr’s Pink, and whilst not technically an Irish variety, British Queen is a variety the Irish know and love. You can find all these varieties on our website as well as at the farm if you’re passing.
This time last year we had stated getting the ground ready for our potato crop and by the middle of the month had started planting. Every year is different and we will be keeping a close eye on the weather to make sure we get it right. In previous years, our fields have still been flooded, and potato planting has been pushed to as late as May. Historically potato plating coincides with Easter, but for us we do it when we can and when the weather allows to ensure we have a good crop for you in the Autumn.
When we do get to it, we will be planting around 30 varieties again this year which will include traditional varieties such as King Edward, much loved varieties including Golden Wonder & Wilja and exotic varieties such as Vitelotte, Heide Red and Pink Fir Apple.
If you’re looking for potatoes for your kitchen or for your restaurant, please get in touch. Whilst we may have our small honesty stall, we also supply wholesale companies and deliver directly to local restaurants.
