Ancient woodlands, natural foraging and a season that won't last long - make the most of wild garlic while you can.
It's wild garlic season and the woodlands at Morghew are carpeted with it! Their wild garlic grows naturally in ancient woodlands, without any spray or fertilisers, and picking started back in mid-March - supplying local farm shops, restaurants, an honesty stall and markets in London. They always pick to order so that no leaves are wasted, ensuring they never over-pick or damage the natural landscape.
The wild garlic season is a short but beautiful one, available for around six weeks in total. It will be around for a little while longer, so wherever you're getting yours from, make the most of it. You can also freeze the leaves to make the season stretch a little further!
Wild garlic is a simple ingredient but a very effective one - a few leaves go a long way. If you're looking for recipe inspiration, head to the Morghew website for ideas. And with World Health Day this month, there's never been a better excuse to get outside, breathe in the woodland air and pick up something seasonal while you're at it. If you're foraging yourself, always make sure you have permission from the landowner and take care to identify leaves correctly.
