Kent ice cream makers take the top three spots in Guardian's national taste test

Bears and Simply Ice Cream were ranked the best of 99 ice creams reviewed for taste, value and originality this summer

The Guardian has just published its annual round-up of the UK's most unusual ice cream flavours, and Kent came out on top. Food writer Lucy Knight tasted her way through 99 tubs from supermarkets, independents and designer collaborations across Britain, ranking each on taste, value and originality, and two Produced in Kent members claimed all three of the top spots.

Bears Ice Cream Imaginarium, the Whitstable ice creamery, took first and second place. Their brown butter popcorn flavour was named the best of the whole taste test, praised for getting the balance right between savoury, sweet, rich and creamy. Their miso banana butterscotch and cinnamon sponge, Bramley apple jazz flavours took second place, with the reviewer singling out the fruity, creamy depth of both.

Third place went to Simply Ice Cream, the family-run Ashford ice cream maker, for their brown bread flavour, praised for striking a great balance between an unusual flavour and a well-made, creamy ice cream.

It's a brilliant result for two of our members, and a reminder that some of the best ice cream in the country right now is being made right here in Kent.
