Jo's Blog: Marching On With Coffee

We made it! The mornings are feeling less like punishment, the days are slowly stretching out, the birds are back doing their thing at 5am (thanks for that), and there's finally a whisper of spring in the air. You know what that calls for. Go on, put the kettle on. Or better yet the coffee machine.

However you take it, coffee is one of life's small, reliable pleasures. And it turns out, we owe the whole thing to a dancing goat.

Centuries ago in the hills of Ethiopia, a goatherd named Kaldi noticed his goats getting suspiciously lively after nibbling on some red berries. He tried them himself, and the rest is history. That little burst of bean-fuelled energy has been keeping humanity upright ever since.

Here in Kent, Goatherd Coffee takes that legend to heart - in name and in spirit. Roasting from a working farm down the road from me in Wouldham, they're quietly fixing the thing most of us didn't know was broken: stale coffee. No months-old beans lurking in a warehouse, no shortcuts - just ethically sourced, small-batch brilliance, delivered while it's actually fresh. They’ve got everything from full-strength espresso to a gentle half caff (as an elder-millennial, this is a favourite of mine now that full strength coffee has the same effect on my brain that 8 vodka red bulls used to), and you can have it on your doorstep without even changing out of your dressing gown.

Locally sourced, ethically produced, served with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. And if oat milk is your thing, Wild Oats is worth knowing about. A barista-designed oat drink made with golden British oats and none of the ingredients you'd need a chemistry degree to identify. It steams beautifully, lets the coffee actually taste like coffee, and makes a flat white look genuinely elegant. Field to froth, made close to home.

So here's to the longer days creeping back in, the morning ritual that makes them bearable, and if you need it - the jangle-free mercy of a good half caff.
