Kent is full of stories hiding in plain sight, and Quiz Trails are the perfect way to uncover them. Take this one: a beloved entertainer once called a Kent town home, sharing a manor house with his on-screen sidekick (a certain unruly emu) and a romance that raised more than a few eyebrows locally.
Born on the Isle of Sheppey in 1935, the entertainer in question spent over a decade building a life in Australia before returning to the UK in the early 1970s. It was around this time that his personal life took an unexpected turn: a new relationship (not with the famous American singer some might assume, but a different Cher altogether) led him to set up home at a manor house in this town, where the couple lived for fifteen years and went on to marry and raise a family.
At the height of his fame, with bookings that included performing for a young Prince William at a royal birthday party, fortune smiled on him. But the highs were followed by lows: a later move to a grand house in Rochester ended in financial ruin, and his life came to a sudden, sad end in 1999 at the age of sixty-three.
It's exactly this kind of hidden history that makes Quiz Trails such a brilliant day out. Created with love by a mum and her two (adult) daughters, each trail leads you step by step through the streets, turning local knowledge into clues and clues into discoveries. No two trails are the same, and no two days out are either.
Fancy becoming the clue-solving champion of your friends and family? Grab a trail, lace up your boots, and let Kent's history surprise you, one street at a time.
