He was the middle of three children, and by his own account it was an uncomplicated, happy upbringing. He once asked his father whether the family were rich. His dad laughed. He'd assumed they must be, because they were so happy.

That boy grew up to become one of Britain's best-loved character actors, recognised the world over for his role in a landmark British comedy series and his appearances in one of Hollywood's most successful film franchises. His sisters and their families still live in Kent, so he's not entirely lost to the county either.
