Sevenoaks Quiz Trail: Why Does Sevenoaks Have Eight Oak Trees?

Quiz Trails help people discover the true stories and curious details hiding in towns and cities across Britain. And Sevenoaks has a rather obvious question hiding in plain sight: why can you find eight oak trees at The Vine when the town is called Sevenoaks?

The town’s name has long been associated with a group of seven oak trees.

But the trees you’ll see today at The Vine Cricket Ground in Sevenoaks have a more recent story.

Why were seven oak trees planted at The Vine?

In 1902, seven oak trees were planted there to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.

For decades, the seven trees stood together.

Then came the Great Storm of 1987.

Six of the seven were blown down, leaving just one survivor.

Seven replacement trees were subsequently planted — meaning that instead of seven…

The Vine now had eight oak trees of different ages.

Perhaps that’s just as well.

Renaming the town Eightoaks would have been terribly inconvenient.

You’ll discover more curious stories and hidden details in our Sevenoaks Quiz Trail.
