Woodlands filled with wild garlic, pollinators returning to the fields and spring crops being drilled mark the start of a new season on the Tenterden estate.
The weather is hopefully on the way up, the nights are drawing out, and spring will very soon swing into action.
Around the farm the farmers have now put a pause of tree felling until next winter to allow birds to build nests and breed amongst our woodlands during the spring. We will also begin to see our woodlands carpeted with wild garlic and bluebells. The deer herds are venturing out into the warm spring light and bees will soon be busy, pollinating the spring flowers, making honey for us all. If you’re taking a spring walk through the estate, please let us know what you see along the way!
You may have also started to see our oil seed rape fields beginning to glow yellow in the distance, these fields bring with them an abundance of insects and pollinators. For us, the rich sea of yellow is the sign that spring is on the way! Once the flowers have gone and the seeds have matured, it will be harvested in the summer and the seeds then pressed into oil. Rapeseed oil is low in saturated fats and high in healthy unsaturated fats, can be used for everything in the kitchen from frying to dressings.
As soon as we can, and the weather allows, the farmers will be drilling the spring crops including spring wheat and spring oats which will also be harvested in the summer and then sent off to make your porridge, cereals and bread. Of course, we will also be planting the potato crop for the year ahead!

Whilst they might be known for their variety of potatoes, the estate offers a whole lot more.
