How Did Benenden Sauce Begin?

Our story started in 1998 in a farmhouse kitchen in the village of Benenden, Kent.

Sally Harrington created what would become Benenden Sauce by hand, blending natural ingredients and refining the recipe until it was exactly right. It was never designed to be a mass-produced product. It was created to taste good, to feel honest, and to reflect the countryside around it.

That spirit remains at the heart of everything we do.

Why Did We Keep It Artisan?

Because it works.

When something is made carefully in small batches, you can taste the difference. We blend and bottle our sauces in Goudhurst, nestled in the Weald of Kent, using the same principles that guided Sally from the beginning.

No artificial preservatives.
No additives.
No stabilisers.

Just real ingredients, handled properly.

What Changed in 2025?

Ownership evolved, but our philosophy did not.

Harrington Foods found new ownership in 2025, yet we remain committed to Sally’s original vision. We continue to honour the heritage of Benenden Sauce and Quiddity Dressing, ensuring the recipes and production methods stay true to their roots.

We are proud to carry forward a Kent food legacy.

Why Does Heritage Matter in Kent Food?

Kent has long been known as the Garden of England.

Being based in Goudhurst means we are surrounded by orchards, farmland and independent producers. Supporting the local rural economy matters to us. Staying small-scale allows us to remain connected to the landscape and community that shaped our products.

We are not trying to reinvent tradition. We are preserving it.

How Has Benenden Sauce Built Its Following?

People discover it, use it once, then come back for more.

Its sweet, gently garlicky character and unmistakable red colour make it memorable. It separates naturally because we refuse to force it into uniformity with stabilisers. That honesty has earned loyalty across Kent and beyond.
