Spanning over 2,500 acres in Birchington, Quex Farms is farming with the future in mind.
There's a phrase you'll hear often at Quex Farms: "we leave our environment in a better position than we found it." It's not a marketing line. It's the principle behind every decision made across this sprawling East Kent estate, from the way the wheat is drilled to the sheep grazing the cover crops before spring planting begins.
Quex Farms operates across more than 2,500 acres, growing wheat, oats, fava beans, oilseed rape, potatoes, and vegetables, alongside dedicated environmental land including wildflower meadows, hedgerows, grazing marshes, wetlands, and managed woodland. More than 20% of the total farmland is given over to environmental schemes, creating what the team describe as a "super highway" for pollinators moving through the landscape. Their approach is guided by the Nature Friendly Farming Network, and their commitment to soil health is evident at every turn: no-till drilling, companion cropping, mechanical hoeing instead of chemical intervention, and cattle grazing the marshes to return nutrients naturally to the land.
Behind all of this is a tight-knit team led by Estate Manager Anthony Curwen, with Arable Farm Manager Elliot Waters, Farms Manager David Whitehead, and Vegetable Manager Jack Scott among those shaping the day-to-day work of the farm. They're a group who clearly care deeply about what they do, and it shows. Quex Farms is also LEAF-accredited (Linking Environment and Farming), welcoming school groups and community visits to the farm so that the next generation can see, first-hand, how their food is grown. This is farming with purpose, and it's happening right here in Kent.
