3 QUIZ PRINCESS ANNE

19th August 2025

Quiz Trail Question of the week: Where in Kent did Princess Anne go to School?

In 1963 Queen Elizabeth II and her daughter Anne left Balmoral, Scotland and set off on the night train to Kent ... to enrol Princess Anne into Benenden School for her first day.

Benenden is a village just five miles from Tenterden. Benenden School is a private boarding school for girls and has a strong reputation as one of the best boarding schools in the UK. It was founded in 1923, and the school grounds cover 250 acres of land.

Anne says of her time at the school “I had no problem with going to Benenden. I was looking forward to sharing with other girls. One of the drawbacks of home education is that you are the whole class. Having 30 girls around you mean that you don’t have to answer everything yourself and that took off a lot of pressure.”

The staff addressed her as Princess Anne, but the other pupils called her Anne. Anne attended for five years, leaving in 1968 with six O-Levels and two A-Levels. During this time Anne’s mum visited many times on private visits. After Anne had left, in 1972 denim jeans were introduced as permitted uniform!

The Princess Royal has been on 41 official trips to Kent fulfilling 81 separate engagements. She has also visited Kent on a personal level due to her friendships in the equestrian world.
