Shepherd Neame The Three Mariners Oare

21st July 2021

Run your own pub with Shepherd Neame

Have you ever dreamed of running your own pub? If so, award-winning brewery and pub operator Shepherd Neame currently has the rare opportunity of seven tenancies up for grabs.

The independent family firm, based in Faversham, Kent, is currently advertising for new landlords at the following characterful town and country pubs across Kent: The Three Mariners, Oare, Faversham; Artichoke, Chartham; Princess of Wales, Margate; Peacock, Goudhurst; White Horse, Boughton under Blean; Compasses, Crundale; and Tudor Rose, Borden.

Although perhaps best known for pubs in its Kentish heartland, Shepherd Neame has more than 300 pubs throughout London and the South East, from the historic heart of the City to the Kent coastline. As Britain’s oldest brewer, it has won numerous accolades for its beer, most recently honoured with nine medals in the International Beer Competition 2020 and named Brewer of the Year 2021 by the Good Pub Guide. Shepherd Neame is also an acclaimed pub company, named Best Tenanted/Leased Company in the 2020 Publican Awards and shortlisted for the award again this year.

And if you want to know whether to run a Shepherd Neame pub, just ask its licensees! According to this year’s Licensee Index report – an independent assessment of pub companies based on the views of their licensees - Shepherd Neame now has an overall satisfaction rating of 93%, and 94% of licensees would recommend the company to others.

Shepherd Neame scored particularly highly for the Covid-19 support provided to date with a rating of 9.7 out of 10. Indeed, it was the first pub company to waive 100% of licensee rent when the crisis began last year, providing over £4.8million of financial support throughout all lockdown periods, and has invested £5million into maintaining and improving its tenanted estate over the last year.

Tenanted Trade Operations Manager Greg Wallis said: “The challenges posed by the pandemic have been severe, but we are committed to putting our tenants and lessees at the heart of everything we do, and have been proud to support them through this period, which is why we were delighted with the feedback on our performance in The Licensee Index. During this crisis our licensees have demonstrated, more than ever before, the important role they have to play at the heart of their communities. Their ingenuity and team spirit has been truly inspiring, with many adapting to the new situation by pivoting their offer completely. We have done everything possible to help them in these efforts to preserve the future of their businesses.”

As well as enjoying the benefits of being self-employed and running your own business, as a licensee with Shepherd Neame you will also enjoy a wealth of free support from their in-house specialists in areas such as technology, marketing and PR, business administration and financial planning, and food and drinks. Extensive training is also on offer, whether you are completely new to the industry or an experienced licensee keen to develop your skills.

Tenanted Trade Operations Manager Greg Wallis added: “Shepherd Neame is privileged to own some of the most characterful, historic pubs in the country. We are a flexible and agile business, and don’t believe one size fits all. Our licensees are self-employed independent entrepreneurs and we see our job as providing a comprehensive range of support and initiatives to help them achieve their individual goals and business ambitions.”
