Prince William of Gloucester was a former pupil at Wellesley House School in Broadstairs. At the time he was born he was fourth in line to the throne. He was Queen Elizabeth II's cousin and when aged 6, he was a page boy at her wedding to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the age of 12 he attended the Coronation. After leaving his Broadstairs education here he went on to Eton then to Cambridge.
He was cool, young, and handsome. He enjoyed nightclubs, drove sports car, played polo, skied, and was also a trained pilot. It was in Japan when he was working there in 1968 that he fell in love with a beautiful Hungarian-born ex-model, Zsuzsi Starkloff. She was seven years his senior and a divorcee.
When he told his family of his hopes to marry Zsuzsi they weren’t happy at all. She wasn’t considered suitable. After four years the relationship naturally cooled off as William put his duty to the throne first. He never did marry and tragically met his premature end at the age of 30. On 28th August 1972, Prince William of Gloucester died in an air crash while piloting his plane in the Goodyear International Air Trophy - his co-pilot also died instantly.
At the time of his death, William was ninth in line to the throne. The Queen ordered a period of mourning for the Royal Family until William's funeral was held. He was buried in the Royal Burial Ground in Frogmore, where many deceased members of the Royal Family are buried including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson are also buried there together.
