From the Woods: Firewood & Charcoal from Morghew Park Estate

Morghew Park Estate includes around 200 acres of woodland - predominantly broadleaved, well-served by forestry tracks, and managed with the kind of long-term thinking that tends to characterise an estate that has been in continuous operation since the tenth century. Much of that woodland had become derelict even before the Great Storm of 1987. Restoring and coppicing it has been a significant undertaking, but it has produced something really useful: a sustainable, local source of firewood and kindling for woodburners, open fires and outdoor fire pits across the region.

Firewood from Morghew is available in a range of formats - chestnut logs, general firewood, bags of kindling - either delivered or collected from the estate's honesty stall in Tenterden. The woodland management that makes this possible is careful and methodical, the kind that improves the habitat over time rather than simply extracting from it. The estate's woods are split between well-managed compartments and less-managed, wilder areas, providing a range of woodland conditions that benefits both the trees and the wildlife that depends on them.

Then there is the charcoal. Morghew stocks traditional charcoal made from their own Kentish woodland using time-honoured methods - the kind of charcoal that has real character and does its job properly.
