Potatoes are just the beginning. Morghew Park Estate in Tenterden grows, mills, presses, and forages an exceptional range of produce from its 2,000 acres of Kentish farmland.
There is a version of farm diversification that involves bolting a tearoom onto an existing operation and calling it a day. Morghew Park Estate in Tenterden has taken a different approach. Over the years, the produce coming off this 2,000-acre Wealden estate has expanded steadily and logically - each new product a natural extension of what the farm already grows, manages or harvests from its land.
The most famous products are perhaps the potatoes. Morghew grows at least twenty varieties every year across 35 acres of what they describe, with characteristic understatement, as "the best ground on the estate”. Conventional varieties sit alongside heritage and exotic ones, sold in bags from 1kg to 25kg from the estate's honesty stall, and available to order online for nationwide delivery. From those same fields came the idea for Morghew's potato vodka - a clean, crisp and surprisingly fruity spirit distilled from a surplus of Yukon Gold potatoes and several years of wondering whether their tubers might have potential beyond the dinner plate. It turns out they did.
Beyond the potatoes, the farm's arable operation produces wheat, rye and spelt - milled on-site into Morghew's strong stoneground wholemeal flour. Rapeseed is cold pressed into rapeseed oil. The estate's managed woodlands yield firewood, kindling and charcoal. In spring, wild garlic is hand-picked and sold by mail order to restaurants and home cooks. In season, the estate's bees produce honey. And from the shoot and the wider estate come pheasant, duck, pigeon and venison - prepared and sold through the honesty stall and online in a range of cuts.
All of it is available through the estate's Potato Shop on Smallhythe Road, open seven days a week. The stall operates on a trust basis outside of staffed hours - labelled envelopes, a letterbox and the reasonable expectation that people will do the right thing. It is, in its quiet way, a rather Morghew approach to retail.
