You can now order fresh, local fish every week through the Kent Veg Box website, thanks to a new partnership with award-winning Boathouse Fisheries in Hythe.
You can subscribe to a regular Fish Box delivery that will only contain fresh fish from the Kent coasts, with occasional ‘guests’ from Sussex/Essex waters.
As the fish sourced by Leigh at The Boathouse Fisheries will be fresh, you can buy for your freezer too. It will come filleted, vacuum packed & labelled, making your life easier!
With Kent Veg Box’s online portal, you are in complete control of your orders too. You can amend, skip or cancel anytime online yourself. With no contract and delivery to your home this is truly the best way to access fresh local fish.
Why Does This Partnership Make Sense?
Kent Veg Box’s business plan is to only use Kent based famers & producers, thereby focusing on low food miles, strong local supply chains and supporting the Kent economy.
Boathouse Fisheries shares that same ethos, working closely with small inshore day boats operating from Hythe and other Kent ports.
What better way could there be to create a simple, local Fish Food System, combining the local fish expertise of Leigh at Boathouse Fisheries with the simple subscription and distribution model developed by Steve at Kent Veg Box.
The collaboration came about after the two businesses connected at a recent Produced in Kent Network &… event held at The Boathouse itself – proof that good local connections really do lead to good local food.
What Makes This Fish Different?
This is not supermarket fish that has travelled hundreds or thousands of miles, frozen at sea in massive trawlers.
Leigh at Boathouse Fisheries sources fish directly from small, sustainable day boats. These inshore boats use smaller nets, can return undersize fish safely and land their catch fresh.
“We’re incredibly proud to work with the local day boats along the South East coast,” says Leigh. “The fish we supply through Kent Veg Box is landed fresh, handled by our skilled team here in Hythe, and delivered quickly so customers are getting the very best quality. It’s about keeping things local, sustainable and properly fresh.”
Steve added “What really excites me is introducing our customers to real local fish like Gurnard and Dabs. Most people’s experience of fish is limited, by supermarkets, to Cod or Haddock or Mackerel. Sure, we can have those too, but only when they are swimming in our waters. Flounders are a wonderful fish to eat, abundant in our waters, but you’ll have to work hard to source them. No more.”
How Does This Help Reduce ‘Sea Miles’?
Kent Veg Box is on a mission to reduce Sea Miles – the distance fish travels from capture to sale.
Large industrial super-trawlers can catch, process and freeze thousands of tonnes at sea. While this keeps prices low, it often comes at a cost to fish stocks and marine ecosystems.
By sourcing through Boathouse Fisheries and supporting small South East coast boats, this partnership keeps the food chain short, transparent and sustainable.
Better for the environment, better for the fleets, better for the fish.
